BURDEKIN residents will be able to show their Aussie spirit at the Australia Day Celebrations to be held at the Burdekin Theatre later this month.
Burdekin Shire Mayor Councillor Lyn McLaughlin said the celebrations would include performances by Simply Dance and the Burdekin Singers.
“There will also be a naturalisation ceremony and the traditional Australia Day awards, as well as the cutting of the Australia Day cake,” she said.
The awards will include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Junior and Senior Cultural Awards, Junior and Senior Sports Awards, Sports Administrator Award and Community Event of the Year.
Cr McLaughlin said the ceremony would see several local residents receive awards for their achievements and contributions to the community.
“These awards are the Burdekin community’s way of saying thank you to the recipients for their contribution to our region, be it through representing the region in sport or by volunteering their time to various organisations,” she said.
The Burdekin Singers will perform songs from their upcoming production of Grease and the National Anthem will be sung by Brianne Rossato and Stuart Woods.
The ceremony will conclude with complimentary morning tea and serving of the Australia Day cake in the theatre foyer. Wunjunga residents Bill and Betty Lucas will also have their freshly made damper on offer.
People wanting to attend the festivities can buy an entry ticket from the Burdekin Theatre, Burdekin Library in Home Hill or at the door.
