Closing date nears for Australia Day Award nominations

Time is running out to recognise the work of local residents by nominating them for an Australia Day Award.

Burdekin Shire Council Economic and Community Development Manager Tony Vaccaro said the deadline for nominations was fast approaching and urged residents to nominate someone they thought deserved some recognition for their work.

“If you know anyone that is active within our community, whether it be in sport or the cultural sectors, then it is worth making the effort to put their name forward,” he said.

“The Australia Day Awards are about recognising the accomplishments and contributions of local residents. Also if you know of someone that was previously nominated but missed out then by all means nominate them for the 2013 awards.”

Mr Vaccaro said past winners of the awards had been residents who had worked for the community over many decades, while others were recognised for their sporting achievements.

There are categories for outstanding citizens, sportspeople, sports administrators, sportspeople with a disability and cultural achievements, as well as a category for community events.

Nomination forms are available from the Council Chambers, Ayr and Home Hill libraries and on council’s website www.burdekin.qld.gov.au

The deadline for nominations is next Friday, December 21, 2012.
