The Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships has received a sweet boost with naming-rights sponsorship from Wilmar Sugar.
Sucrogen will be changing its name to Wilmar Sugar during the coming months. The championships will be one of the first events sponsored under the company’s new name.
Burdekin Tourism Association President Treena List said it was exciting to have the owner-operator of the Burdekin’s four mills support the iconic event.
“The Wilmar Sugar Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships is an event that showcases the skill of hand cane cutting and is the only competition of its kind in Australia,” she said.
“This is an iconic event for the Burdekin region – the sugar capital of Australia – and brings a piece of North Queensland history back to life.
“The event is an opportunity to promote the Burdekin and attract visitors to the region.
“We have been overwhelmed with the number of sponsors wanting to come on board to support the event, but there is always room for more.”
The Home Hill Harvest Festival Committee officially handed the co-ordination of the event over to the Burdekin Tourism Association (BTA) today.
Festival Committee representative Tonia Rossato said the Committee welcomed the change and were grateful the BTA had agreed to co-ordinate the event.
“We have successfully run the event for the past two years and I’m sure it will continue to grow under the guidance of the BTA,” she said.
The Wilmar Sugar Australian Hand Cane-Cutting Championships will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Vass’ Farm (cnr Burdekin Road and First Street, Home Hill) from 10am to 5pm.
