2014 Burdekin Australia Day nominations open

Burdekin residents are being urged to nominate deserving citizens for next year’s Burdekin Shire Council Australia Day Awards.

Burdekin Shire Council Economic and Community Development Manager Tony Vaccaro said these awards recognised residents their work within the Burdekin community.

“If you know someone who has done a lot of community work, cultural achievements or sporting achievements, then it is worth making the effort to put their name forward,” he said.

“The Australia Day Awards are about recognising the accomplishments and contributions of local residents.

“If you know people who have been nominated in past years, but had not won, please don’t hesitate to nominate them again.”

Mr Vaccaro said past winners of the awards had been residents who had worked for the community over many decades, while others were recognised for their cultural and sporting achievements.

There are categories for outstanding citizens, sportspeople, sports administrators, sportsperson with a disability and cultural achievements, as well as a category for community events.

Nominations will close on Friday, December 20, 2013.

Nomination forms are available from the Burdekin Shire Council Chambers in Young Street, Ayr; the Ayr and Home Hill libraries; and on the council’s website at www.burdekin.qld.gov.au.
