Burdekin school students urged to enter Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour competitions

Burdekin school students have a chance to be part of the fun at the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour on September 20 by entering two competitions.

Community Development Manager Tony Vaccaro said the Burdekin Race Club, in conjunction with Burdekin Shire Council, was holding a colouring-in competition for children aged 12 and under and a short story competition for students aged 13-17.

“We have contacted all the local schools regarding these competitions and hope to see a lot of entries come in,” he said. “All the winners and runners up will receive a cash prize.”

Mr Vaccaro said the excitement surrounding the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour was building in the community.

“I know the Burdekin Race Club is very excited to have been selected to be part of the Melbourne Cup Tour,” he said.

“Not only will there be a race meet on September 20, but the Club also have organised a Family Fun Day.

“Locals will have the chance to see the Cup that will be presented to the winner of this year’s Melbourne Cup race and also to talk with veterans and racing legends.

“All the fun will kick off at noon and I think it’ll be a fantastic day for Burdekin families.”

The Children’s Colouring-In Competition has three sections – 6 and under, 7-9 and 10-12. Prizes for each section include $50 for winner and $20 for runner up. All entries must be returned to the Burdekin Library Ayr or Home Hill branch by Friday, September 12. The winning entries will be displayed at the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour Family Fun Day.

The Short Story competition’s theme is the History of the Emirates Melbourne Cup and is split into two sections – Junior (13-15 years) and Senior (16-17 years). Junior section entries must be a maximum of 200 words while the Senior entries must be a maximum of 300 words. Winners and runners up of the both sections will receive $100 and $50 respectively. Entries must be accompanied by an official entry form, which will be distributed to students through their school, and lodged by 4pm on September 12.
