Burdekin Water Forum registrations open

A major water forum will bring farmers, scientists and government representatives from around Australia to the Burdekin Theatre in October.

Registrations are now open for the Burdekin Water Forum 2017, a three-day event exploring the management of irrigated agriculture in Great Barrier Reef catchments.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor and Burdekin Water Futures Chair Lyn McLaughlin said water was the lifeblood of the Burdekin.

“It is so important that we manage our water resources strategically and with a whole-of-system approach, to ensure the sustainability of our water catchments into the future,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“In Great Barrier Reef catchments, the management of irrigated agriculture comes with unique challenges. Farmers across Australia have been working hard to achieve some fantastic environmental outcomes in these areas.

“This conference will showcase initiatives that have been developed in various communities and environments across the country.

“It will include presentations and discussions around innovative irrigation and cropping management practices, water and nitrogen use efficiency, water quality innovation and regulations.”

The Burdekin Water Forum is coordinated by Burdekin Water Futures. Cr McLaughlin said it would feature presentations and discussions by water managers, extension officers, farmers and grazers, industry specialists, scientists and government representatives.

The forum will be held Monday 9 October to Wednesday 11 October 2017.
