Cultural workshops in lead up to NAIDOC Week

Burdekin Library will celebrate NAIDOC Week by hosting indigenous cultural workshops for Ayr State School and Home Hill State School students.

The workshops, to be held on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 June, will be led by local cultural artists and educators Aicey Zaro and Sharon Russo.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said NAIDOC Week, this 2-9 July, was a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.

“The workshops will be an opportunity for local students to learn more about and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures,” Cr McLaughlin said.

Keeping with the 2017 NAIDOC Week theme Our Languages Matter, Aicey and Sharon will talk about the Burdekin’s indigenous culture, history and Birri-Gubba language.

The students will go on to participate in a diverse array of craft, music and dance activities.

Cr McLaughlin said following the workshops, children would draw or paint a picture at school representing something they had learnt or enjoyed.

“These will then be displayed in the libraries for NAIDOC Week,” Cr McLaughlin said.
