National Recycling Week

2014 Trash is Trendy competition

Trash is Trendy Competition

The Burdekin Shire Council is running the Trash is Trendy competition to celebrate National Recycling Week.

Your mission is to create wearable articles of clothing out of items that would normally be placed in your yellow-lidded recycle bin. This could be clothing, jewellery, hats and accessories.

Your reward will be $100 cash. Runners up will receive a family pass to Reef HQ or Billabong Sanctuary.

You have until November 5 to get your creative piece of trendy trash to Council’s offices in Young Street, Ayr.

All the entries will be displayed at the Home Hill Harvest Festival Mardi Gras on Saturday November 8, at the Burdekin Shire Council’s marquee.

National Recycling Week 2014

During this year’s National Recycling Week, which runs from 10 to 16 November, Burdekin Shire Council would like to encourage everyone to take part in a range of activities designed to promote recycling and waste minimisation. Everyone can recycle and make a difference!

One of our key messages for National Recycling Week 2014 is to promote kerbside, industrial and community recycling initiatives, giving people the tools to minimise waste and manage material resources responsibly at work, home and school. Burdekin Shire Council is already working to address some of these issues in the Getting Burdekin Business Busy Recycling project, currently being undertaken in conjunction with the Australian Packaging Covenant and the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

Home Hill Harvest Festival

Burdekin Shire Council will hold a display stall in conjunction with the Home Hill Harvest Festival, during the Mardi Gras on Saturday 8 November, to remind the community of the importance of recycling. Entries in the Trash is Trendy competition will be displayed in the stall and winners announced on the night. Information about waste and recycling will be available and we would like to invite students and their families to visit and learn more about recycling and sustainable practices at this time.

We look forward to seeing many wonderful and creative entries during our National Recycling Week event and having the opportunity to promote waste minimisation and recycling in the Burdekin
