Co-operative Mural
Eighth Avenue, Home Hill.
A large mural depicts elements of rural life in the Burdekin, including cane farms, mango orchards and farmhouses. The mural was painted by Ayr artist Margaret Redweik. Canecutter mural
A tribute to the men who made their living in the canefields. Before the introduction of mechanical cane harvesters in the 1960s, farmers relied upon gangs of canecutters to get their cane to the mill. Hand canecutting was tough work requiring stamina and great skill with a caneknife.  This mural was painted by Ayr artist Margaret Redweik.

Fishing

The Burdekin's greatest claim to fame is its fishing. Launch your boat at one of the boat ramps to chase the elusive barra or try a bit of beach fishing.

By far the district’s greatest claim to fame is its fishing.

The Burdekin is well-known for its barramundi, mudcrabs, other estuary species and off-coast reef fishing. The district has one of the highest rates of boat ownership per head of population and many locals have fishing huts at Ocean Creek, Plantation Creek, Groper Creek or Wunjunga.
