'Come and Try Day

A group of representatives from our Youth Council participated in the Come and Try Fitness Day held in ANZAC Park.  The days aim was to encourage the youth of the town to get involved in various outdoors sports and activities.

The Burdekin Youth Council's provided free face painting which was a huge hit with the children of the community.

The day was a huge success and are planning a similar event for 2008.

Battle of the Bands 2008

YOUTH bands who want to bring their sound to the stage are urged to nominate for this year's Burdekin Battle of the Bands.Organised by the Burdekin Shire Youth Council, the popular annual competition will be held at the Burdekin Memorial Hall on Sunday, April 6.

Youth Council secretary Tammy Quagliata said nominations were now open for the event. "The nominations close on Friday, March 21, so bands have less than a month to get their entry forms in," she said.  "In the past, we've had entries from Townsville, Thuringowa, Bowen, Charters Towers and Ingham, as well as the Burdekin, so there's been a lot of competition and the standards have been really high."

She said past competitions had attracted up to 15 bands, but organisers planned to limit nominations to 12 this year due to time constraints.

Mrs. Quagliata said this year’s event would be held at the Burdekin Memorial Hall in Home Hill, instead of the Burdekin Theatre in Ayr.  "We've decided to hold the competition in Home Hill for the first time because the Memorial Hall is a bigger venue and we think we'll get a more concert-like atmosphere.

"We're also getting a guest band up from Brisbane for the first time.  The band, 'Gods Girlfriend' is an up-and-coming Brisbane club band which is being hailed as the 'next big thing'," she said.  Mrs. Quagliata said each band taking part in the competition would perform two songs, one of which should be an original.

The bands will be judged on their musical ability, originality, stage presence, audience appreciation and commercial viability.  Winners will receive cash prizes.

Previous Battle of the Bands - 2006

The 2006 Battle of the Bands commenced at 6.30pm on Sunday the 9th of April. Although the event was moved inside the theatre for the second year in a row (due to the chance of rain), it was one of/if not, the most successful Battle of the Bands held to date. Sixteen talented bands from the Burdekin and surrounding areas participated in this annual Battle. For four hours, the bands electrified a large crowd of approximately 500. The Youth Council would like to thank the many generous sponsors that helped make the event a success. See you there in 2007.

Purple shirts!

Look out for our new bright PURPLE shirts! The colour purple was selected because it is bright and it stands out, so it will be easy to identify a Youth Council member. The amazing logos shown below are featured on our shirts and were created by the talented Amy Tuffin.

The shirts would not have been possible, if it wasn't for Melissa Previteira from QLD Youth Services who provided the funding. Thank you Melissa.
