Mayor and Councillors

The elected Mayor and councillors play an important role in improving the livability of our community by considering and maintaining many of the services and facilities used in everyday life. Some of the functions include addressing residents’ needs, providing essential infrastructure and protecting the environment.

WELCOME to the Burdekin, the sugar capital of Australia and one of the most prosperous rural communities in the country. Built on liquid gold, the Burdekin is a great place to visit and to call home.

Our patchwork of canefields makes a pretty sight from the top of Mt Inkerman and the district’s fertile soils, abundant water, and plentiful sunshine make it ideal for a host of other crops, ranging from mangoes to melons.

The two main towns of Ayr and Home Hill are just 12km apart, and are connected by the landmark Burdekin River Bridge. The towns have a good range of specialty shops, chain stores, cafes, hotels, and restaurants. There are plenty of car parks and no traffic jams, so getting around the Burdekin is easy. Friendly service and easy-going locals make a shopping trip in the Burdekin a delight.

The Burdekin offers one of the country’s best lifestyles with its tropical climate and relaxed pace of life. There are great fishing spots, beautiful beaches, and picturesque wetlands. There are also some great walking trails and plenty of sporting and recreational facilities.

The Burdekin Shire Council and its residents take great pride in their community and aim to make visitors feel welcome in our community. There is an all-abilities playground at ANZAC Park to keep the young visitors happy and swimming pools to cool off in.

Home Hill recently celebrated the town’s centenary. There are a number of memorials that have been erected around the town, celebrating our pioneers and marking historic sites.

For information on what to see and do whilst visiting the Burdekin, drop into the Visitor Information Centres at Ayr and Home Hill.

    Enjoy your stay,

    Bill Lowis
