Council adopted a three bin waste management system which commenced with the new contract on 1st July 2009.
As of 1 July 2009, the Burdekin Shire Council extended recycling to all households in the waste collection area.
All households in the towns of Ayr, Home Hill. Brandon, Giru, and Alva were provided with an additional green waste service.
Each residential property in these towns have been provided with three wheelie bins –
- one for general waste
- one for green waste
- one for recyclable items
The new 3 bin system encourages Burdekin Shire residents to recycle and reduce the amount of green waste ending up at our landfill which has long term benefits to the community and the life of our landfill areas.
The scheme will halve the amount of waste going into landfill, cut greenhouse emissions, and save ratepayers money.
The three-bin system is current ‘best practice’ in the area of waste management. The council is demonstrating its commitment to good environmental practices by becoming the first local government in North Queensland to adopt this system.
How does it work?
- All households in the waste area received new bins for general garbage. The smaller 140-litre bins have red lids.
- In the towns of Ayr, Home Hill, Brandon, Giru, and Alva the existing 240-litre garbage bins will be change to a light green lid and be for green waste.
- The 240-litre recycling bins (yellow lid) will continue to be used for recyclable items such as paper, cardboard, glass and plastic.
When are bins collected?
- General waste bins are collected once a week.
- Recyling bins are collected once a fortnight.
- Green waste bins are collected fortnightly, on the alternate week to the recycling bin.
Why are we doing this?
- Landfills are costly for communities to construct and manage. Removing green waste and other recyclables will potentially double the life of our landfill and delay these costs for your community.
- When green waste breaks down in landfills, it generates methane – a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
- Every tonne of green waste that we devert from landfill saves around one-third of a tonne of greenhouse emissions into the atmosphere. This will qualify council for greenhouse emission credits.
- Diverting green waste out of our landfill will save the shire money when the State Government introduces its planned Landfill Tax.
Why the smaller rubbish bins?
About half of what goes into local rubbish bins, on average, is green waste. As well, a high proportion of recyclable material is going into general waste bins. A small garbage bin will be adequate if residents fully utilise their green waste bin and recycling bin.

What will happen to the green waste?
Council is investigating several options, including recycling green waste into graden mulch or agricultural compost, or using it as a fuel for co-generation.
Council’s current waste management contract started on 1 July 2009. It was appropriate and timely to improve the waste removal service as part of the eight-year contract.
What can I do if the 140L waste bin is not adequate for my family/business?
If you find that this size is not adequate, then a 240 litre bin can be requested for an addition cost. Residents may also request an additional recycle bin for an additional cost. Costs are available from Council.
