Birds/Poultry

Residents are permitted to keep various types of birds on residentially zoned land throughout the Burdekin Shire, subject to maximum numbers, responsible management, and land area controls as outlined under Council's Local Law No 4 (Keeping & Control of Animals).

Please visit our Animal Registration and Permits page for permit requirements pertaining to birds and poultry.

To ensure the welfare of Poultry and caged birds are maintained, Council expects the following minimum standards to be upheld:

  1. The provision and access of adequate shelter, clean drinking water and appropriate food;
  2. Waste waters from enclosures to be drained in a nuisance free manner;
  3. An excreta, offensive material or food scraps must be collected at least once each day and placed into an approved fly-proof refuse receptacle for disposal;
  4. The provision of a proper enclosure to confine the birds/poultry at all times.
  5. A pen/aviary must be sited a distance from any habitable dwelling that ensures that noise, odour and infestation of vermin does not impact on that residence.
  6. An enclosure which includes an open fenced area, must be sited a minimum distance of 1500mm from the allotment boundaries.
