Restricted Dogs

A restricted dog is a dog being of or containing the following breeds:

  1. American Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier types or cross breeds of an American Pit Bull Terrier.
  2. Dogo Argentino or cross breeds of a Dogo Argentino.
  3. Fila Brasileiro or cross breeds of a Fila Brasileiro.
  4. Japanese Tosa or cross breeds of a Japanese Tosa.

A crossbreed, or the offspring of, the abovementioned breeds or type of breed whether or not the dog appears to be a dog of that type of breed is also considered a restricted dog.

Within the Burdekin shire, the owner/keeper of a restricted dog/s is required to obtain a restricted dog permit from the Council.

Council disallows breeding of restricted dogs.

Desexing of the dog is required within three (3) months of the owner being issued with a restricted dog permit unless desexing is not in the interests of the dog's health i.e. the dog is less than six (6) months of age.

As an owner of a restricted dog, there are several very important obligations to be maintained to ensure the health and safety of the public and other animals. These include:

  1. The dog must at all times wear a collar with an attached identifying tag distributed by Council.
  2. The dog must not be in a public place unless it is muzzled and under the effective control of someone who has the control of no more than two (2) dogs of any breed or type at the same time.
  3. An enclosure for the dog must be maintained at or on a place for which the permit has been given.   Of which this place is to be childproof.
  4. A sign must be placed at or near each entrance to the place for which the dog resides.
