Registration - Dogs

In accordance with Local Law No 4 (Keeping & Control of Animals), persons at or on any residentially zoned land within the shire are currently required to register their dog with Burdekin Shire Council if it is over three (3) months of age. Dogs must also be registered within 14 days of obtaining your dog or within 14 days of moving into the Burdekin Shire.

Certain animals exempted from registration include:

  • Working dogs;
  • Racing greyhound dogs registered with the industry body for greyhound racing in Queensland;
  • Show Dogs/Cats;
  • Guide Dogs.

Council requires all registered dogs to wear either internally or externally an identifying device approved by Council capable of providing information as to the assigned registration number of the animal.

Note: Exemptions for special dogs - guide dogs, show dogs or a dog with a medical condition that is aggravated by the wearing of a collar.

Why should you register your dog?

  1. Registration provides identification, which means lost dogs can be reunited with their owners.
  2. Dog identification will be vital in the event of a disease outbreak.
  3. Information on registration provides statistics to help Councils provide appropriate management strategies and facilities.

What is the Registration Period and Fees?

  • The period of registration for dogs is for twelve (12) months from 1 st July to the 30 th June next, being that financial year.
  • An Early Bird discounted registration fee is available for all new registrations and renewals if paid within the period of 1 st June to 30 th June.
  • A discounted registration fee also applies to desexed dogs.
  • Council actively encourages residents to voluntarily have their dogs desexed, and to identify them by a collar and tag distributed by Council after registration. It is necessary to ensure your dog is controlled to prevent nuisance wandering and to protect wildlife in our shire.
