A FAMILY fun day is being held in the Burdekin this weekend to get residents prepared for the upcoming cyclone season.
“Cyclone Saturday”, the event will bring together all of the major agencies involved in disaster management so residents can get the information they need to face a natural disaster.
It will be held at the former junior soccer grounds in Macmillan Street, Ayr, from noon to 4pm this Saturday (October 1).
Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group chairman Lyn McLaughlin said this was the first time an event such as this had been organised for the Burdekin.
“It will be similar to Townsville’s Cyclone Sunday, although on a smaller scale,” she said.
“We’ll have stalls from all of the services that play a critical role in times of cyclones, floods or other natural disasters.
The Ayr Local Ambulance Committee has organised a display of a new portable hospital, the new two stretcher and bariatric Ambulances, and a communications bus.
Cr McLaughlin said some of the agencies that would be represented on Saturday were the Queensland Ambulance Service, Emergency Management Queensland, State Emergency Service, Queensland Police, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, Ergon Energy, Volunteer Marine Rescue, Telstra, and local broadcaster Sweet FM 97.1.
She said residents would be able to talk to representatives from the various services and take home free information bags full of brochures, fridge magnets, important phone numbers, cyclone tracking maps, and other goodies.
Cr McLaughlin said the event was designed as a family day out and there would be free entertainment, rides, and face painting for children.
Cyclone Saturday is being coordinated by the Local Disaster Management Group and the Ayr Local Ambulance Committee.
