Free wind-up torch/radio for Burdekin households at Cyclone Saturday

With cyclone season almost upon us Burdekin families are being urged to attend Cyclone Saturday this weekend and collect a free wind-up radio/torch.

Cyclone Saturday organiser Eileen Robinson said the event would be held at the former junior soccer fields adjacent to the PCYC on Macmillan Street, Ayr, on Saturday (October 27, 2012) from 2pm to 5pm.

“Each household within the Burdekin region will be supplied with a free wind-up radio/torch,” she said. “We have purchased these radio/torches to giveaway to each household because they don’t rely on power or batteries, making them an ideal addition to the family’s Emergency Kit during disasters. The torches also will be available from the Council Chambers from Monday. (October 29)

“At Cyclone Saturday there will also be cyclone tracking posters, information sheets and all of the emergency services will be there giving out free information and advice.”

Ms Robinson said Cyclone Saturday was designed to raise awareness of the services available to Burdekin residents during an emergency.

“All of the emergency services will be represented and to make it a fun day for the whole family there will be free entertainment including, jumping castles, slides, bouncy boxing, skirmish, a merry go round and face painting as well as market stalls,” she said.

“There will also be food and drinks available and all monies raised from food will be donated to the local charities. It’ll be a great family afternoon with something for everyone.”
