People illegally draining their yards into the Burdekin Shire Council’s sewerage system have contributed to a number of properties being inundated with excess water.
Burdekin Shire Council Environment and Operations Director Trevor Williams said last night’s heavy rain had naturally infiltrated the sewerage system leading to drainage issues in some areas.
“However, we have also had reports of people adding to problem by lifting their manhole covers and illegally letting water drain into the sewerage system,” he said.
“I would like to remind residents that it is illegal to interfere with sewerage operations and there is a substantial fine if they are found.
“Draining water into the sewerage system has caused the system to back up at the lowest points and it is affecting other residents.
“These drainage issues should ease as our pump stations catch up.”
Mr Williams said the council Customer Service Centre had received complaints from residents about water coming up through their showers, baths, drains and toilets.
