The Burdekin Shire’s Youth Council took the opportunity to meet with the new councillors during this week’s meeting.
Youth Council Mayor Lexi Haselton addressed the meeting to explain the role of the Youth Council.
Miss Haselton said the Youth Council was a team of young people who represented youth.
“We communicate and liaise with the community and organise projects and events in order to improve the status of young people and provide them with great opportunities,” she said.
“In 2012 a few things that the Youth Council have or will be involved in include the 2012 Burdekin Band Fest in April, undertaking a mural project with the Lower Burdekin Home for the Aged, involvement in Tastes of the Burdekin and Burdekin Water Festival.”
Miss Haselton said the Youth Council also was proposing to host a Burdekin Unplugged Talent Competition in October and a Movie Marathon Night during the school holidays.
In the past the Burdekin Youth Council has been involved in the Home Hill Centenary Picnic in the Park, Burdekin Relay for Life and took part in community consultations for various community projects and plans.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Bill Lowis welcomed the shire’s young leaders and thanked them for explaining their role.
