‘Tis the Season for Carols in the Park

Get your singing voices ready for the Burdekin’s community Christmas event, Carols in the Park, next Sunday (Dec 8) at ANZAC Park in Ayr from 6pm.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Bill Lowis said Council had moved the venue of the popular annual event to provide a better family atmosphere.

“This is a great way to get into the spirit of Christmas and this year we also are bringing back the lantern parade,” he said.

“Council has put a link on how to make a lantern on the Carols in the Park event listing on our website.

“This event is a chance for everybody to kick off their Christmas festivities and enjoy being part of a really positive community event.

“It has become a nice tradition for Burdekin families and I sincerely thank all involved with bringing the joy of Christmas to our community.

“It is heart-warming to see children with their parents, singing carols and enjoying the entertainment.”

Carols organising committee chairperson Cr Lyndy McCathie said residents should not bring traditional candles with naked flames.

“For safety reasons we ask that no one brings a traditional candle, however there will be safety candles and glo-wristbands on sale at the venue,” she said.  “Residents should also bring their own blanket or chair so they can enjoy the carols in comfort.

“If it happens to rain, we will move the event to the Burdekin Theatre.”

The program, which will end about 8.30pm, features the Zaro family, Combined Churches Choir, Italian and Indian choirs, the St Francis Choir,  Burdekin Community Church Band, Rhythm Edge Dance Studios and the Burdekin Brass Band. The special guest for the event is Santa who will arrive at 7pm.

Ayr Rotary Club and the Burdekin Scout Group will offer food and drink for sale.  Sweets, tea and coffee will be available for sale from the Cherish ladies of the Burdekin Community Church.

Carols on the Green is supported by the Burdekin Shire Council, Burdekin Churches Together, the Lower Burdekin Newspaper Company, Ayr Chamber of Commerce, Burdekin Brass Band and 97.3 Sweet FM Radio Station.
