Burdekin residents can stock up on free mulch this weekend (February 16-17) from the Burdekin Shire Council’s stockpile at the Ayr Transfer Station.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Bill Lowis said council would provide a loader to fill people’s utes, trucks or trailers with mulch from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and 8am to 1pm on Sunday.
“These days have proved popular in the past and it’s a good way to reduce the large mulch stockpiles at the Ayr Transfer Station,” he said.
“This is a good time of the year to consider mulching your gardens to combat weeds and prevent water loss from the soil.
“Mulching also improves the quality of soil by adding organic matter and provides an insulation layer on top of the soil to keep plant roots cool.”
Cr Lowis said no mulch was available from the Home Hill Transfer Station so the giveaway day was only happening at the Ayr station.
