Vandals caused about $4000 in damage to sprinkler systems and water connections on five roundabouts in Ayr on Wednesday night (Aug 28).
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Bill Lowis said the damage was found by Council employees on Thursday morning and a report had been sent to police.
“The vandals caused damage to three roundabouts in Munro Street, one on Edward Street and one on Young Street,” he said.
“Council employees have already repaired the broken plumbing and replaced sprinklers, but it is this sort of mindless act that adds to the financial burden of our ratepayers.
“What Council has had to pay to fix this is the equivalent to almost two rates payments – what a waste.
“Council is doing its best to save ratepayers money, but then you get people causing this sort of destruction which is just wasting ratepayers’ money.”
