Burdekin residents can fill their trailers with mulch for free this weekend from the Burdekin Shire Council’s stockpiles at the Ayr and Home Hill Waste Transfer Stations.
Environment and Health Manager Beth Whitworth said Council would provide a loader to fill people’s utes, trucks or trailers with mulch.
“The loader will be available at the Ayr Transfer Station from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and 8am to 1pm on Sunday,” she said.
“Home Hill residents are able to have mulch loaded on Saturday from 11am to 2pm.
“We have a large amount of mulch available at the moment and I would encourage residents to take advantage of this free service this weekend.
“Residents who are coming to collect mulch are asked to follow the directions of operators at all times for safety reasons.”
Mrs Whitworth said now was the perfect time to mulch.
“We have not have a lot of rain so adding a layer of mulch to your garden will reduce the amount of watering required,” she said.
“Mulching improves quality of soil by adding organic matter and provides an insulating layer on top of soil to reduce water loss and keep plant roots cool.”
