The Burdekin Shire Council has selected Malas Constructions to construct the Burdekin PCYC extension.
Mayor Bill Lowis said the $650,000 extension would include new activity rooms, kitchenette areas, office facilities and storage spaces.
“We expect to have the first draft of working drawings before Christmas and construction of the 350m2 facility will begin in March-April next year,” he said.
Cr Lowis said the main function of the new facility would be to provide school-aged care.
“The centre will provide a safe haven for our youth before and after school and it will be a place where they will enjoy supervised recreational activities,” he said.
“When not in use for school-aged care, it will be open for use for activities such as tiny tots gymnastics, playgroup, flexible learning and youth development programs and other suitable community programs.
“There is also pro provision for a fitness area which may be offered to our community for use.”
Council received a grant for the Burdekin Community Redevelopment Project from the Queensland Government’s Royalties for the Regions program earlier this year.
