Burdekin residents are being encouraged to get their maroon on and celebrate Queensland Week.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Bill Lowis said the week celebrated the state’s culture, heritage, people and industry.
“Queensland Week centres on the State’s birthday on June 6 and marks Queensland’s separation from New South Wales to become a separate colony in its own right,” he said.
“Council has coloured the Ayr CBD fountain maroon in honour of this week.
“I would encourage businesses and residents to also show their maroon colours throughout the week.”
Cr Lowis said the celebrations would culminate in the Burdekin Queensland Week Family Fun and Fitness Expo at ANZAC Park in Ayr on Sunday from 9am-1pm.
“We’ll have Les “Lock’n’Load” Sherrington, the current WBA Oceania Middleweight Champ, roaming around the event as guest MC, Captain Active will be there to show us how exercise can be fun and there will be displays from local businesses,” he said.
“There are about 30 different health, fitness and wellbeing stalls lined up and lots of free entertainment for children.
“I would encourage residents to take advantage of this great free family event to celebrate the great life we have in Queensland.”
The Burdekin Queensland Week Family Fun and Fitness Expo will run from 9am until 1pm at Anzac Park, Ayr, on Sunday, June 7.
The Burdekin Shire Council received a $6500 Queensland Government grant to host the Queensland Week event.
