A community-minded couple were named Citizens of the Year at the Burdekin Shire Council 2015 Australia Day Awards.
Burdekin Mayor Bill Lowis said Peter and Janette Pattinson worked together as a strong team.
“They support each other and are not often seen far apart working tirelessly on community projects and events,” he said.
“They have been members of various community groups and organisations including P&C associations, Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company, Burdekin Cruisers Car Club, Burdekin Relay for Life, Ayr Swimming Club and the Burdekin Water Festival, just to name a few.
“This husband and wife team have dedicated many long and tireless hours to the community and also raised three children who consider their parents to be inspirational role models.”
Cr Lowis also congratulated Reece D’Alessandro on receiving the Young Citizen of the Year Award.
“Reece had numerous official roles throughout 2014 including Home Hill State High School School Captain, Burdekin Shire Youth Council Mayor, Interact Club Vice President and Valedictory Committee Chairman,” he said.
“He has been compere of many events including Tastes of the Burdekin, Burdekin Water Festival, Burdekin Relay for Life and Council’s Christmas Carols.
“He has done all of this and managed to stay focussed and excel in his final year of school.
“He was awarded the Senior Dux Academic Excellence Award, the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership Scholarship, the Dawson Medallion and many more at the Home Hill State High School presentation night.”
Cr Lowis thanked all award nominees and recipients for giving back to the Burdekin community.
“We are very fortunate to have so many community-minded people living in our region and I thank them all for taking the time to make our community a better place to live,” he said.
