Burdekin Shire Council has voted to reduce pool safety inspection fees in an effort to encourage pool owners to ensure their pool is compliant.
New State Government legislation covering pool fences was introduced on December 1, 2010, aimed at ensuring all pool fences were of a certain standard. The State Government gave pool owners five years to ensure their fences complied with the new regulations by November 30, 2015.
Today’s Council decision was aimed at ensuring Burdekin pools were safe and also offered a financial saving to residents.
Council’s Planning and Development Manager Shane Great said the current fee for pool inspections was $235.55 plus $190 if a re-inspection of the fence was required.
“From today Council’s pool safety inspections will cost $185.55 and the re-inspection fee will also be waived,” he said.
“This reduced fee also includes the cost of a Pool Safety Certificate which is normally $35.55. I would encourage all pool owners who haven’t had their fences inspected to do so while Council has these reduced fees.
“The cost of the inspection is far cheaper than a fine of almost $800 for residents and $2277 for corporations, if your fence does not comply with the current standards.”
Mr Great said residents were able to check the pool fence requirements on the Queensland Building and Construction Commission website.
“Once they know the requirements residents can make the appropriate changes themselves,” he said.
“If a pool fence is found not to be up to standard, Council will notify the owner by mail and advised that the fence must be fixed to the correct standard immediately.
“Our inspectors will advise the pool owner of the timeframe for compliance and if work is not done then Council will issue a penalty notice.
“However, if the pool fence is severely defective the owner faces an on-the-spot fine and/or a court appearance.”
