The new Burdekin Community Redevelopment Project at the Burdekin PCYC was today officially opened by Minister for Disability Services, Minister for Seniors and Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O’Rourke.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor thanked the Minister for taking time out of her busy schedule to travel to the Burdekin for the event.
“Back in March 2011, Council held a similar official ceremony for the opening of the Burdekin Multi-Tenant Service Centre and the commencement of the PCYC operations in the Burdekin district,” he said.
“That project was an outstanding success and the facility has been a wonderful asset for the Burdekin community since its construction.
“Council is pleased the Multi-Tenant Service Centre has serviced the community well and provided a much need facility where children and young adults can come for information, counselling and support.
“The PCYC and Council lodged an application for the extension under Round 3 of the Royalties for the Region funding program and last year we were advised by the Queensland Government that we had been successful.
“Council was awarded $650,000 to undertake the Burdekin Community Redevelopment Project.
“I thank the Queensland Government and the Department of State Development for their support and financial assistance in making this project come to fruition.”
Cr Lowis said one of the reasons for the extension was to provide a school-age care service for local families.
“With many two working parent families in the community, there is an increasing need for after school and holiday care of their children,” he said.
“I hope parents take advantage of these new facilities and the recreational opportunities through the various PCYC programs.”
