New award categories added to Australia Day ceremony

There are now even more reasons to celebrate Australia, its people and their contributions to our community at next year’s Burdekin Australia Day Awards Ceremony.

Burdekin Shire Council Community Development Manager Tony Vaccaro said five more categories had been added to the awards program including Lifetime Contribution, Achievement, Excellence and Senior and Junior Environmental Awards.

“Individuals contribute to our community in a number of different ways and we wanted to provide more opportunity to acknowledge everyone who helps make the Burdekin a great place,” he said.

“These awards are a way of acknowledging those who are active within our community and make a difference to those around them.

“We are very fortunate that our community has a great depth of volunteers and community minded residents who deserve recognition, but we need you to nominate them.

“If you know of someone that was previously nominated, but missed out, then by all means nominate them for the 2016 awards.”

The award categories include recognition for outstanding citizens, sportspeople, sports administrators, cultural achievements, environmental achievements and community events.

Nomination forms are available from the Burdekin Shire Council Chambers in Young Street, Ayr; the Burdekin Library Ayr and Home Hill branches; and on Council’s website at

Nominations close on Monday, December 21, 2015.
