Burdekin Library Ayr Branch will be closed for the remainder of today (Thursday, 7 July 2016) due to the sudden onset of fumes resulting from repairs happening in the overhead Music Loft.
Burdekin Shire Council has made the decision to close the facility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patrons and staff while the repairs are carried out.
Deputy Mayor Councillor John Woods said the Music Loft was undergoing repair following water damage caused by a burst pipe in 2015.
“Men have been working all week sanding the floors upstairs (at the Music Loft) in preparation of resealing them but as soon as the work began it became apparent that the Library would be unable to operate,” Cr Woods said.
“The fumes caused during the process have a very unpleasant odour and have the potential to make people feel unwell so the Library will have to remain closed until the smell clears.
“We will keep the public informed via Council’s website and Facebook page.”
Cr Woods apologised for any inconvenience caused by the closure but advised that the Home Hill Library would still be open to accommodate patrons.
“If anyone requires services the Home Hill Library is open from 1-5pm today and tomorrow (Friday),” he said.
“Hopefully normal services will resume on Saturday, 9 July at 9am.”
