Loads of free family fun to celebrate Queensland Week

Looking for a way to get fit that is a little different? Come along to this weekend’s Burdekin Queensland Week Family Fun and Fitness Expo at Anzac Park to see what’s available.

A group from Burdekin Martial Arts – Silat Perisai Diri (PD) will be on site showing just how easily you can get active and also gain personal safety knowledge. PD is a unique Indonesian martial art which was introduced to Australia in 1979 and teaches people how to use their natural reflexes to combat an attack situation.

Master Corey Lane said a martial arts regime was a great way to stay fit and for self-protection.

“Our aim is teach people to have the most effective response to an attack from the point of view of putting themselves in the best position to counter attack,” he said.

“We will have a display at the Expo and our members will also have a demonstration to show people our martial art.”

Burdekin Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the Expo was a great way for the community to see what fitness options were available to residents.

“This event offers people a chance to talk with a wide variety of organisations about different types of sports and fitness regimes and hopefully will give them the incentive to adopt a healthier lifestyle,” she said.

“It’s also a great family day with lots of fun free activities for children such as a jumping castle, rock climbing, a merry-go-round, bungee trampoline and face painting.

“I’m a great believer in exercise – it is good for your body, a great stress release and an excellent way of meeting new people.

“Just walking every day will help and it gets you out enjoying our wonderful region, especially at this time of year when it’s a little cooler.”

The Burdekin Queensland Week Family Fun and Fitness Expo will be held from 9.30am-12.30pm on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Anzac Park, Ayr.

The Burdekin Shire Council received a $5000 grant to hold the Expo through the Queensland Government’s 2016 Queensland Week Sponsorship Program.
