A Christmas message from Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin
As we count down the days to Christmas, it’s a perfect opportunity to look back on our achievements as a community over the past 12 months.
We have so much to celebrate this festive season. Another busy sugar cane crushing season has come to an end and our local students have farewelled the school year at numerous award and graduation ceremonies across the Shire. I would like to wish all our graduates a very big congratulations and the best of luck in whatever career path you choose.
We are all lucky to be residents of the Burdekin during this time of year, with access to pristine beaches; great fishing; wonderful shopping and eateries; and so many cultural attractions and events right on our doorstep.
I invite everyone to attend our Christmas Spectacular, on tomorrow Thursday 21 and Friday 22 December at Burdekin Theatre. The event, being held in place of Carols by Candlelight, is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the year gone by. There will be free activities and entertainment in the Theatre Forecourt from 5pm and from 7pm the Christmas carols and children’s play ELF commences. Although the auditorium seats are sold out, families are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs along and watch the screening live in the Burdekin Theatre Forecourt.
The presentation of the Australia Day awards will occur on Thursday 25 January 2018 at the Burdekin Memorial Hall in Home Hill. The Australia Day Ceremony will commence at 7pm and will recognise and reflect on the accomplishments of Burdekin residents and organisations who give so much to the community. Burdekin Shire Council is also privileged to have Australia Day Ambassador Mr Scott Stidson OAM addressing the audience.
As the disaster season is now approaching, I would also like to encourage you to take the time to get ready. All households should now have received Burdekin Shire Council’s Emergency Action Guide and Recovery Factsheets. The development of this comprehensive guide and factsheets has been a major project assisted with funding from the Get Ready program provided by RACQ and the State Government.
Please note, Burdekin Shire Council Chambers will be closing for the period beginning Monday 25 December 2017 and re-opening Tuesday 2 January 2018. Be assured that officers will be on-call for emergencies during the shutdown period and if you require assistance please call (07) 4783 9800. Garbage collection will continue to operate as normal over the festive season.
After all the hard work of the past few months, Christmas is an important opportunity to finally relax and spend quality time with family and friends. It is also an excellent time for us all to reflect on the past year and the many achievements of individuals, groups and businesses.
On behalf of Councillors and staff at Burdekin Shire Council I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy, safe and healthy New Year.
