Preliminary concept designs for the proposed Plantation Park Nature Based Play Space have been presented to Burdekin Shire Council.
Some of the highlights of the concept design include an interactive water play area and creek bed; fossil digs; swings; a rope balance bridge and net climb and a sensory respite garden with seating. The design also incorporates accessible pathways and imaginative play opportunities.
The hero of the development would be a proposed multi-level fortress with hiding nooks, rock and rope climbs and an elevated viewing area.
The plans will be on public display for the next few weeks and residents are invited to provide their feedback in person at Burdekin Shire Council’s Customer Service Centre or the Ayr branch of Burdekin Library, or by calling Council on (07) 4783 9800.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the project was based on Melbourne’s award-winning Royal Park, but on a smaller scale.
“During Council’s community consultation about the future development of Plantation Park, many people suggested playground equipment be provided in the area,” Cr McLaughlin said.
“The project is in keeping with the natural bush setting at Plantation Park and will be unique for North Queensland. The concept offers fantastic opportunities for children to enhance their fine motor skills and develop upper body strength by incorporating challenges and risk encountered in outdoor play.”
A steering committee with community representatives developed a wish list of ideas for the play space, which helped to inform the concept design.
The Department of Infrastructure and Planning approved $2.93 million in funding to Council earlier this year, to upgrade existing infrastructure and allow for the establishment of new projects.
An amount of $494,000 has been set aside to be spent on developing the Plantation Park Nature Based Play Space.
The plans are currently on public display at the Council Chambers, Ayr Library and at the following links:
