Burdekin Shire Youth Council recruiting 2018 team

Nominations for the 2018 Burdekin Shire Youth Council are now open, giving young residents aged 12-25 a dedicated platform to share their great ideas for the community.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the Youth Council was a wonderful forum for young people to provide feedback and information to local government.

“They get out into the community and get their voices heard. They achieve some incredible things in the process,” she said.

Last year, the Burdekin Shire Youth Council played a key role in running the Burdekin Fast Track Talent Showcase, which showcased the extensive talent on offer in the district and included a special concert by Australian Eurovision entrant Isaiah Firebrace.

It was awarded the Community Event of the Year at the recent Australia Day Awards Evening.

Cr McLaughlin said Fast Track was due to return in April 2018 with the announcement of a celebrity guest expected soon.

“It will be one of the first projects our next Youth Council will have the opportunity of working on,” she said.

“Throughout the year, the Youth Council communicates and liaises with the community; represents youth; and organises a wide range of projects and events in order to improve the status of all young people in the Shire.

“Meetings are held on a monthly basis so members only need to commit a few hours a month of their time.”

Membership of the Youth Council is open to young people who live, work or study in the Burdekin.

Cr McLaughlin said the members gained skills they would have for the rest of their lives.

“They’re learning how to host meetings and how to plan community events,” she said.

“They’re getting all this experience and they’re having fun while they’re doing it.”

The first Youth Council meeting for the year will commence at 3.30pm on Monday 26 February in the John Drysdale Chamber at the Council Chambers, 145 Young Street, Ayr.

Nomination forms are available at Council’s Customer Service Centre and at the Home Hill and Ayr branches of Burdekin Library.
