Events on hold as Council combats COVID-19
Burdekin Shire Council is putting measures in place to slow the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19 locally, announcing the cancellation and postponement of several Council events.
Burdekin Shire Council is putting measures in place to slow the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19 locally, announcing the cancellation and postponement of several Council events until further notice.
The decision was made on the back of this morning’s announcement by the Federal Government to cancel non-essential indoor mass gatherings of more than 100 people and covers events planned to be staged at the Burdekin Theatre, Burdekin Memorial Hall, Ayr Showgrounds and Burdekin Libraries.
Burdekin Shire Council Acting CEO Nick O’Connor said while events had been cancelled or put on hold, Council’s community and cultural facilities would remain open, with increased cleaning of public areas to be undertaken to minimise the public health risk.
“Slowing the spread of COVID-19 across our country has called for an unprecedented response from the community, and I encourage everyone in the Burdekin to do their part,” Mr O’Connor said.
“Council is acting in line with advice from Federal and State agencies, which has involved cancelling and postponing all performances and events at our cultural and community venues effective immediately.
“There will be no shows at the Burdekin Theatre until at least the end of May, with the potential to extend this pending Federal advice. All Library programs including our First 5 Forever Program, Seniors Embracing Technology, Kids Club, and school holiday activities have also been paused until alternate advice is provided.
“I want to assure residents that Council facilities are all still open, with key resources such as internet-accessible computers at the Libraries cleaned more regularly.
“To ensure we comply with social distancing guidelines, customers may wish to contact our Customer Service, Box Office and Library teams by phone or email. Again, this will help reduce the public health risk.
“For customers with internet access from home or a mobile device I would like to advise Council staff are looking at innovative ways to deliver activities, such as educational webinars and Storytime, online. Keep an eye on the Council, Burdekin Theatre and Burdekin Library Facebook pages in coming days and weeks for updates.
“While Council continues to be proactive in slowing the spread of COVID-19, Queensland Health remains the lead agent in our State for advice and information on the virus and prevention measures so I encourage everyone to check health.qld.gov.au for regular updates.”
