Burdekin students have the chance to win $2,500 following the Local Government Association of Queensland launching a free city simulation game where players can build the town of their dreams.
Better Communities, available on both Android and Apple devices, asks users to build their ideal community while facing some of the complex decisions faced by local governments.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the Better Communities app was a great way to keep children entertained at home while providing them with an understanding of the broad range of services delivered by Councils.
“The Better Communities app takes things one step further than your usual city simulation game, asking users to define policy priorities and make difficult decisions based on realistic local government scenarios,” Cr McLaughlin said.
“Scenarios range from land development and budgeting to emergency services, pollution, education and more.
“The Local Government Association of Queensland is encouraging all students to build the best community they can, with two $2,500 prizes up for grabs: one for primary school students, and one for high school students and young people.
“Our children live in the best community in Queensland, so I am sure any town in the app that is a reflection of the Burdekin Shire would have a great chance of winning.”
Better Communities by the Local Government Association of Queensland can now be found in both the Apple and Android stores. The competition is open to all school-aged children and is open until 5pm on Friday, 26 June. More information on the competition can be found in the app.
