Council has strategies for preventing the introduction, eradicating and containing restricted and prohibited pest plants in the Burdekin. Management strategies for the most common pest plants can be found in the Burdekin Shire Biosecurity Plan 2016-2019. Most common pest plants found in the Shire would be delegated under Class 3 Restricted Invasive Plants. The Act classifies Restricted Invasive Plants as, class 2,3,4 &5. Category 2 must be reported within 24hrs, Category 3 must not distribute, sell, or release into the environment, Category 4 must not move the plant, Category 5 must not keep the plant. The Biosecurity Act requires everyone to take all reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants and animals under their control. This is called a General Biosecurity Obligation.
