Looking for a fun way to get your class or community group thinking about waste?

Knowing what goes in each bin and what happens to our waste after collection can help us make better choices, reduce waste and recycle right.

Burdekin Shire Council offers fun and interactive waste and recycling education sessions for local schools and community groups. Sessions can include games, hands-on activities and discussions designed to make learning about waste and recycling practical and engaging.

Waste education sessions can cover topics such as:

• what goes in each household bin
• how recycling works
• common recycling mistakes
• what happens to waste and recycling after collection
• ways to reduce waste at home, school and in the community.

Council also has a range of free waste and recycling resources, including fridge magnets, bin stickers, booklets and fact sheets.

Ever wondered what happens to your recycling after your yellow-lid bin is collected?

All recyclable materials collected from Burdekin's yellow-lid bins are transported to the Townsville Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where they are sorted into different material streams ready for recycling.

A visit to the MRF is a great way to see the recycling process in action and learn why putting the right items in the recycling bin matters. Visitors can observe how recyclables are sorted and discover what happens when non-recyclable items end up in the recycling stream.

The facility also features an interactive education space, providing schools, community groups and visitors with hands-on learning opportunities about recycling, resource recovery and waste reduction.

MRF tours are available for schools, community groups and other interested groups, subject to availability.
