Roads and Drainage Scope of Works

Burdekin Shire Council has commenced critical roads and drainage upgrades within the Ayr Industrial Estate. The works are being delivered with support from the Queensland Government's Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP) and will improve the long-term safety, drainage, accessibility and operation around the industrial estate.

Drainage upgrades in McCathie Street, Bird Street and Oakes Street are currently underway, with works scheduled to be completed by mid-December 2026. Drainage works will be carried out in stages and include the reconstruction of underground stormwater culverts and drainage pits. Surface drainage and kerb and channel works will be finalised during the subsequent road reconstruction works.

Road reconstruction works are scheduled for completion following the upcoming wet season. Works will include replacement of subgrade and reconstruction of road pavements, asphalt sealing, and kerb and channel along Bird Street and Oakes Street. Reconstruction works will also include intersection upgrades at McCathie Street and Breen Street.

Traffic Conditions and Road Closures

Please exercise caution if you are visiting or working in the Ayr Industrial Estate and be mindful of temporary traffic management and signage, changes to road conditions and restrictions to accessibility.

To assist with maintaining safe access during construction, avoid on-street parking along the affected construction areas.

Businesses with driveways that may be impacted by the works will be contacted directly prior to any road closures. Businesses receiving heavy vehicle deliveries are encouraged to communicate with their transport providers and ensure suitable arrangements are in place for vehicles entering, maneuvering within and exiting properties.

Proposed Construction Timeline

Council is working to complete drainage upgrades between September and December 2026, with road works to commence from April 2027. A proposed timeline of the works can be found below. Please note that this is an estimated program only and is subject to change. Construction progress will be dependent on the timely completion of each stage of works, as well as weather and ground conditions.
