Regulated Waste and Special Burial

Burdekin Shire Council has introduced a booking process for the disposal of regulated waste, including asbestos, and other difficult wastes requiring special burial at Kirknie Landfill.

 

Council does not accept regulated waste originating outside the Burdekin Shire.

This process helps protect landfill capacity, supports sustainable waste management, and ensures Council can continue to meet the needs of the local community.

 

Before You Visit

A disposal application must be submitted to Council at least 24 hours before your proposed disposal date.

Council will review your application and advise if the booking has been approved. Waste presented at the landfill must match the approved booking details.

 

How to Apply

  1. Complete a Regulated Waste Disposal Application Form.
  2. Email the form to enquiries@burdekin.qld.gov.au or return it to Council's Customer Service Centre.
  3. Allow at least 24 hours for approval.
  4. Wait for confirmation before transporting the waste to Kirknie Landfill.
  5. Landfill staff will verify the waste against the approved booking when you arrive.

Existing waste tracking and payment requirements remain unchanged.

 

Why Is Approval Required?

Queensland legislation regulates what wastes Council can accept at its landfill facilities.

Council requires information about:

  • The type and quantity of waste
  • Where the waste originated
  • Who is transporting the waste
  • How the waste has been packaged and prepared

For asbestos, the process helps ensure waste is handled, transported and disposed of safely and in accordance with legal requirements.

If you cannot meet the asbestos disposal requirements, you should engage a licensed asbestos removalist or transporter.

 

Urgent Special Burials

If you need to dispose of waste requiring immediate burial, such as:

  • A large deceased animal
  • Food waste resulting from a freezer failure

please contact Council before transporting the material to the landfill.

Who needs to apply?

Does this apply to all Council waste facilities?

No. The process only applies to Kirknie Landfill. Council transfer stations cannot accept regulated waste.

Will this create delays?

No. Council already requires 24 hours' notice for these waste types. The new process simply formalises the approval requirements.

What happens if my waste does not match the booking?

Waste that does not match the approved booking details may not be accepted. Additional information, fees or compliance action may apply where requirements have not been met.

What if asbestos is concealed within other waste?

Concealing asbestos is a serious offence that places staff and the public at risk. Council may issue infringement notices and refer matters to the relevant authorities for investigation.
