Residential Three-Bin Service 

All households in the towns of Ayr, Home Hill, Brandon, Giru and Alva receive a three-bin waste service:

• Red-Lid - 140L General Waste Bin - Collected weekly
• Yellow-Lid - 240L or 360L Recycling Bin - Collected fortnightly
• Green-Lid - 240L Green Waste Bin - Collected fortnightly on the alternate week to the recycling bin

Need more room for recycling? Eligible households can apply to upgrade their recycling bin from 240L to 360L for an additional annual charge.

Residential Two-Bin Service

Rural households receive a two-bin waste service:

• Red-Lid - 140L General Waste Bin - Collected weekly
• Yellow-Lid - 240L or 360L Recycling Bin - Collected fortnightly

Commercial Services

Commercial businesses are provided with a two-bin service and may also request a green waste service if required:

• Red-Lid - 240L General Waste Bin - Collected weekly
• Yellow-Lid - 240L or 360L Recycling Bin - Collected fortnightly
• Green-Lid - 240L Green Waste Bin - Collected fortnightly on the alternate week to the recycling bin (optional)

Need More Recycling Capacity?

Finding your recycling bin fills up before collection day? Eligible households can apply to upgrade their standard 240L recycling bin to a 360L recycling bin.

The larger bin provides 50% more recycling capacity, helping households recycle more and keep valuable materials out of landfill.

A one-off processing fee applies to upgrade your bin. Once approved, the ongoing annual waste service charge remains the same as a standard 240L recycling bin.

Never miss a collection day with Recycle Mate.

Recycle Mate allows residents to access their personalised bin collection calendar, set bin night reminders, and receive collection notifications directly to their smartphone.

Preparing Your Bins for Collection

To ensure your bins are collected safely and efficiently:

• Place bins on the kerbside the night before collection day or before 6:00am on collection day.
• Position bins at least 1 metre apart and 1 metre away from parked cars, power poles, fences, trees or other obstacles.
• Place bins with the handles facing your property and the lid opening facing the road.
• Ensure the bin lid can close completely.
• Make sure there are no overhanging branches obstructing access to the bin.
• Do not overload your bin. The maximum weight limit is 55kg.
• Do not place items on top of, or leaning against, the bin.
• Bin collection days remain unchanged for Burdekin residents, even when they fall on a public holiday.

Prohibited Items

The following items must not be placed in any wheelie bin:

• Batteries, embedded batteries, lithium-ion batteries, power banks, vapes and e-cigarettes
• Hot ashes or acid
• Industrial waste
• Wire
• Tyres or engine parts
• Chemicals and pesticides
• Medical waste
• Gas bottles and fire extinguishers
• Paints, solvents, motor oil and cooking oil
• Heavy materials such as concrete, bricks, timber, soil and rocks
• Asbestos or other hazardous materials
• Flares and EPIRBs

Battery Safety

Batteries and battery-powered devices must never be placed in any household bin. These items can cause fires in collection vehicles, transfer stations and recycling facilities.

Wheelie Bin Services - Need Help?

Please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre regarding your weekly wheelie bin collection if you need assistance with any of the following matters:-

• You have built a new residence or shed and require a new waste service for your property;
• Your bin was not tipped;
• Your bin has been stolen;
• Your bin is cracked or broken, the lid has fallen off or is damaged, the wheels or axle are broken or damaged;
• You need to order an extra bin service or regular additional tips;
• You want to upgrade your general waste bin size from a 140L to a 240L wheelie bin; and
• You want to upgrade your recycle bin size from a 240L to a 360L wheelie bin; and
• You need to cancel a bin service. Please note that cancelling of a waste service will only be approved where the building has been demolished or is unfit for occupation. Commercial businesses may cancel their waste service provided that they are receiving an equivalent waste service from an approved private contactor.
• You are unable to put your bins out for collection due to age, illness, disability or limited mobility.
