Published on 20 October 2025
Burdekin Shire Council is calling on motivated locals to kickstart their careers, with applications now open for Council’s 2026 Traineeship and Apprenticeship Program.
The annual program provides hands-on experience, mentoring and formal qualifications across a range of Council departments helping to build a skilled local workforce and provide long-term employment opportunities within the Burdekin.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the program is an important investment in the region’s future.
“Council’s Traineeship and Apprenticeship Program gives local people the opportunity to gain real-world experience while earning a qualification,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“Many of our past trainees and apprentices have gone on to secure permanent positions with Council or in the wider industry, and it’s something we’re incredibly proud of. This program not only supports local jobs but also helps ensure we have the skills needed to keep our region growing.”
Positions are available across a variety of fields, including Library and Information Services, Executive Support, Mechanical (Diesel Fitting) and Information Technology.
Council’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Matthew Magin said the program offers a great pathway for those looking to start a career close to home.
“We encourage school leavers, career changers, and anyone looking for a fresh start to apply. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, work alongside experienced professionals, and contribute to the delivery of essential local services,” Mr Magin said.
Applications close Wednesday 29 October 2025, with successful candidates commencing early in the new year.
