Trial Closure: Pound Drop-off cages
From 1 May 2025 Council is undertaking a 6-month trial of the closure of the drop-off cages at the animal pound in Mackenzie Street, Ayr.
Council currently rehomes over 80% of the animals that come through the pound however this trial may help us increase this figure.
One of the issues that affects rehoming is that very few people have provided information on the animals they leave at the pound. This could be as simple as the name and age of the animal or important information as to the health or behaviour of the animal. This information helps Council and any interested person to have a better understanding of the animal and increase the possibility of rehoming. Council staff have also been placed at risk when aggressive dogs have been left at the pound.
RSPCA has also supported Councils from around Queensland to close drop-off cages as they cause distress to the animals.
The new process is a more responsible method that benefits the animal.
Surrendering an animal
Council will still provide assistance to surrender an animal. Please contact Council's Customer Service Centre on 4783 9800 to discuss the process. Where possible you will be encouraged to meet the officer at the Animal Pound for the surrender.
A limited after-hours service will also be available between 6.00am and 7.00pm.
