Burdekin Shire Council has finalised the Burdekin Aquatic Centre Master Plan, ensuring the future layout and use of the site meets community needs and expectations while supporting the safe and functional delivery of aquatic services.

The Master Plan, developed by Ross Planning, provides a clear vision for future improvements, including the relocation of amenities, removal of outdated buildings, creation of new green space along Queen Street, and improved vehicle access for maintenance.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the plan was shaped by consultation with both key stakeholders and the broader community.

“We received valuable feedback from residents and user groups through stakeholder meetings and an online survey,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“The community’s views have been instrumental in guiding this plan and ensuring it reflects local priorities.

“This revised design not only improves functionality and safety but also upholds the values our community expressed during consultation. It’s a practical and respectful solution that will serve the Burdekin for years to come.

A community survey conducted from 15 May to 2 June 2025 attracted 40 responses. While the majority supported the proposed layout and new amenities block, strong feedback was received regarding unisex facilities, with many residents expressing concerns around privacy and safety.

In response, Council has revised the final design to include:

• Separate male and female change rooms and toilets

• Accessible facilities for people with disabilities

• Family rooms for caregivers and children

• External showers for general use.

Funding for the new amenities block and removal of the old buildings will be provided through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.

The Master Plan aligns with the Burdekin Shire Council Corporate Plan 2025–2030, delivering safe, functional and welcoming community spaces.
