New Butler Road Floodway Delivers Safer and More Reliable Access
Published on 18 September 2025
Council has completed works on the new Butler Road Floodway, providing a stronger and more resilient crossing for local residents and road users.
Butler Road was identified as being at considerable risk of major inundations from future rain events after substantial scouring and loss of materials from the old floodway during the 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023 events. The upgraded floodway replaces the old structure, ensuring improved safety and reliability during wet weather events.
The design allows for better water flow management while maintaining critical access for surrounding properties and farming operations.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the new floodway was another important investment in local road infrastructure.
“This project delivers real benefits to the community by improving road safety, reducing maintenance needs, and supporting our rural industries with more reliable access,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said this upgrade will make a real difference for communities who frequently experience flooding from the Burdekin River.
“Through funding by both levels of government, Burdekin Shire Council has completed this project to help reduce the risk of isolation and ensure local residents can access essential services and supplies during the next significant flood event,” Minister McBain said.
Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy said betterment was at the heart of the Crisafulli Government’s approach to disaster recovery.
“This project delivers meaningful, tangible results for our community, and it’s a shining example of how all levels of government can work to deliver effective disaster recovery,” Minister Leahy said.
The Butler Road Floodway upgrade is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and upgrading rural road networks across the region and was jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Council thanks the local community for their patience during construction in delivering a high-quality outcome.
