Burdekin Shire Council is inviting the community to attend Breaking Barriers – Shining a light on health and wellbeing in our community, an inspiring afternoon focused on connection, support and meaningful conversation.

Designed for men and women aged 16 years and over, the event aims to foster open dialogue, raise awareness, and empower individuals through shared stories, lived experience and expert insight.

Council is pleased to announce an outstanding line up of guest speakers who will contribute to this important conversation, including:

Jessica Rowe AM, well known Australian journalist, author and television presenter, and respected mental health advocate.

Sam Thaiday, former professional rugby league football player and passionate advocate for mental health awareness, particularly for men, drawing on his own lived experience.

David (Dave) Kramer, Small Steps for Hannah Ambassador, behavioural psychologist and close friend of Hannah Clarke and her family, sharing a powerful message of community connection, safety and respect.

Local guest speakers will also be joining, providing community perspectives and lived experience.

Breaking Barriers is designed to inspire, support, uplift and empower, offering a safe and inclusive space for discussion around wellbeing, safety and respect across our community.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said Council was proud to support an event that places wellbeing and connection at the centre of the community.

“This event is about breaking down stigma, encouraging open conversations and reminding people that support is available,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“By coming together as a community, we strengthen understanding, resilience and care for one another.

“While the topic is a serious one, this event also brings light hearted humour and a few laughs among mates.”

The event will be held on Sunday 26 April at the Burdekin Memorial Hall, Home Hill, with doors opening at 1:00pm, and the event commencing at 2:00pm.

Tickets are $40.00 and go on sale at 10:00am on Monday 23 March from the Burdekin Theatre box office or website.

Guests are invited to enjoy an afternoon of canapés and finger food, with tables of 10 or individual tickets available. Community members are encouraged to gather friends, colleagues and community groups to attend what promises to be an engaging and meaningful event.

Burdekin Shire Council acknowledges the support of Queensland Health through the Tackling Regional Adversity through Connected Communities (TRACC) funding program, which has made the delivery of the Breaking Barriers event possible.
