Burdekin Shire Council advises that Level 1 water restrictions will be implemented in the Giru area from Monday 13 April 2026 for approximately two weeks, while essential maintenance works are undertaken at the Cungulla Treatment Plant.

The planned works will temporarily reduce the plant’s operational capacity, requiring water use restrictions to help maintain a reliable supply throughout the maintenance period.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the restrictions were a precautionary measure to ensure the township continues to have access to water while the works are completed.

“These are essential maintenance works that will support the ongoing reliability of Giru’s water supply,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“We’re asking residents and businesses to be mindful of their water use during this short period so we can maintain supply while the works are underway.”

Level 1 water restrictions focus on reducing non‑essential water use and encouraging the community to use water wisely.

Residents are asked to minimise watering to up to three days per week.

  • No watering on Mondays.
  • Odd numbered street addresses may water on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Even numbered street addresses may water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Council will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates should timeframes change or once the restrictions are lifted.
