Burdekin Shire Council today announced the official opening of the Ayr Brandon Macroalgae Bioremediation Facility, with the Honourable Ann Leahy MP, Minister for Local Government and Water and Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers, visiting the region on Friday 20 June 2025 to lead the ceremony.

The state-of-the-art facility uses RegenAqua’s Macroalgal Bioremediation Technology to drive sustainable solutions in water purification, carbon capture and agricultural innovation.

As a leader in algae-based environmental research, the facility delivers practical outcomes to address key environmental challenges while supporting regional resilience and opportunity.

The Macroalgae Bioremediation Facility is proudly co-funded by the Queensland Government through the Building our Regions and Local Government Grants and Subsidies Programs, alongside Burdekin Shire Council, with industry support from Pacific Bio.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the official opening marks a significant milestone in Queensland’s journey towards cleaner, greener technology.

“We are extremely proud to open this facility right here in the Burdekin. It positions our region at the forefront of green innovation and demonstrates how regional communities can lead the way in environmental sustainability,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“This project reflects what can be achieved through collaboration.

“I sincerely thank the Queensland Government for their funding support through the Building our Regions and Local Government Grants and Subsidies Programs, and acknowledge Pacific Bio’s vision and commitment to advancing this exciting technology.”

Minister for Local Government, Water and Volunteers Ann Leahy said delivering water solutions and infrastructure for generations to come was at the heart of the Crisafulli Government’s Fresh Start for Queensland.

“The facility is an innovative solution and is right at the cutting edge of the wastewater treatment field. Using what is essentially seaweed to remove excess nutrients, is sustainable, environmentally friendly and effective.

“This facility is a great example of regional Queensland taking the lead and embracing emerging technology.

“I congratulate the Burdekin Shire Council on this wonderful facility which I’m sure is going to be a great success for the region,” she said.

The opening event brings together representatives from all levels of government and industry to celebrate the facility’s contribution to environmental innovation and the future potential of macroalgal technology.

The public is invited to attend the Community Open Day on Saturday 21 June, with scheduled tours throughout the day. The event is free however bookings are essential. Secure your spot by visiting https://www.trybooking.com/DAVOQ
