The Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has today moved to Alert status via flying minute in response to current weather forecasts for North Queensland over the coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology advises that the region may receive cumulative rainfall totals of up to 300 mm over the next six days, with the rainfall expected to be spread across several days.

While the risk to the Burdekin remains low at this stage, the LDMG has taken this precautionary step to ensure local preparedness and continued monitoring of conditions.

LDMG Chair, Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort, said moving to Alert allows Council and partner agencies to stay ready should the situation change.

“This activation is not a cause for concern. It is simply part of our normal wet‑season readiness to ensure we remain prepared and responsive,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“While no immediate riverine flooding impacts are expected for the Burdekin, we encourage residents to remain aware of the weather conditions and stay up to date with Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.”

The community is encouraged to:

  • Stay informed by monitoring official sources of information such as the Burdekin Disaster Dashboard: disaster.burdekin.qld.gov.au and the Bureau of Meteorology: www.bom.gov.au
  • Monitor Council’s website and social media channels for updates
  • Avoid driving through floodwaters
  • Use this time to check your household emergency plans and supplies

The LDMG will continue to monitor rainfall and river conditions and will provide further updates should the situation change.
