Burdekin Shire Council has formally joined the growing movement to prevent domestic and family violence (DFV) in Queensland, signing the Not Now, Not Ever. Together. pledge as part of its commitment to building a safer, more respectful community.
This follows Council’s involvement with the Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council throughout 2024, which works closely with local governments, organisations and community stakeholders to raise awareness and challenge behaviours that excuse domestic violence.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said signing the pledge reinforces Council’s ongoing responsibility to lead by example and foster lasting cultural change.
“Domestic and family violence has no place in our homes, our workplaces, or our communities,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“By signing this pledge, we’re making it clear that the Burdekin does not tolerate violence or inequality. Council is committed to working both within our organisation and alongside others to improve prevention, raise awareness and provide support where it’s needed most.”
The pledge states:
“We do not tolerate inequality and domestic and family violence.
Burdekin Shire Council pledges to work toward a Queensland where everyone is equal and free from violence.
Burdekin Shire Council commits to playing our role, working within our organisation and in partnership with others to raise awareness, improve prevention and provide practical assistance to end domestic and family violence.
Burdekin Shire Council recognises as leaders in the corporate and community sectors we have a vital role to play and we agree to use our internal and external and formal and informal networks to activate others to join in this shared objective of keeping everyone safe from violence.”
Council’s commitment aligns with Queensland’s broader DFV prevention strategy and reflects its role in supporting a whole-of-community approach to ending domestic and family violence.
